Replacing Drive Belts

*MEDIUM*

Expect to replace serpentine or V-belts every 4-5 years. To replace V-belt(s), follow this procedure:

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground with the engine OFF, the parking brake engaged, and the transmission in PARK (for automatic) or REVERSE (for manual). Raise the hood. Loosen, but do not remove, the adjustment nut behind the slotted alternator support bracket or slotted idler pulley bracket.
  2. Pry the idler pulley or alternator inward sufficiently to remove all belt tension.
  3. Remove the belt from the pulley. Be certain replacement belt is of the same width and length.
  4. Use the belt routing diagram, usually located on a decal near the top of the radiator, to identify the correct path for replacement belt.
  5. Install the replacement belt and pry the idler pulley or alternator outward to create belt sufficient belt tension. Make sure the belt fits squarely in the pulley grooves and is fully seated. Tighten the adjustment nut enough to hold the belt in place.
  6. Measure the belt deflection at the longest span and adjust the belt tension if necessary.
  7. Tighten the adjustment nut fully. Start the engine to be sure belt does not slip and remains seated. Repeat the above procedure for additional belts if necessary.
  8. Check the belt tension after one month and adjust if necessary since new belts tend to stretch with use.
